【受賞概要】Outline of Award
　本学の日比谷 紀之 客員教授が、千葉市の幕張メッセにて開催された日本惑星科学連合(Japan Geoscience Union; 以下JpGU) 2025年大会において、JpGUフェローに選出されました。JpGUフェローは、地球惑星科学において顕著な功績を挙げ、あるいは日本の地球惑星科学の活動に卓越した貢献をされた方に対して、その功績を評価し、名誉あるフェローとして処遇するためJpGUから授与されるものです。

　日比谷先生は、長期気候変動に影響を及ぼす深層海洋大循環の解明に不可欠な深海乱流の物理機構の解明とその定量化を研究テーマとして長年研究に取り組むとともに、JpGUをはじめ多くの国際学会にて海洋乱流混合に関するセッションを主催するなど、国内外の深海乱流研究を牽引されてきました。現在は、国際海洋物理科学協会(International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans；IAPSO)の Vice-Presidentとして、国際的な研究ネットワークの構築とその発展にも尽力されています。今回の受賞は、深海乱流研究の第一人者としての評価はもとより、このような国際的リーダーシップを発揮されてきたことも高く評価されたものです。

　Visiting Professor Toshiyuki Hibiya has been named a JpGU Fellow at the 2025 Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU) Meeting held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City. The JpGU Fellowship is a prestigious honor awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Earth and planetary sciences or who have played a pivotal role in advancing geoscience activities in Japan.

　Professor Hibiya has dedicated his career to elucidating the physical mechanisms of deep ocean mixing and quantifying their effects--an essential key to understanding the global overturning circulation that drives long-term climate variability. In addition to his scientific achievements, he has been a driving force in advancing deep ocean mixing research both in Japan and internationally, notably by organizing specialized sessions at JpGU and various international conferences.

?? ?He currently serves as Vice-President of the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Oceans (IAPSO), where he actively fosters the development and expansion of global research networks. This award not only affirms his status as a leading authority in deep ocean mixing, but also honors his exemplary leadership and enduring contributions to the international oceanographic community.
